My Ultimate Love/Hate Relationship

The Game of GolfOne of my many uncles came out to the desert this past week as he’s participating in a Ten-Pin Bowling tournament. He stopped by our neck of the…cactus fields to visit for a bit and meet the kids on his way over. During his stay here, my father and another uncle of mine decided it would be a good idea to go golfing before the weekend was over.

As much as I enjoy playing a round of golf, I hate the game just as much as it’s one of the many sports that is more mentally challenging than it is physical. Sure, my wife would say that it’s a worthless investment of time to hit a little white ball, run it down and hit it again. Fair enough, with that description, it’s a complete waste of time, indeed.

However, golf is one of the only games where you can duff that little white ball anywhere off the tee-box, make a clutch pitch and run, hole out after the worst bunker play ever and still save par on the hole while cursing enough to make a pirate blush. Then, after it’s all said and done, those one or two holes out of the eighteen that you do play fair enough to consider the game fun, is what keeps you from throwing the entire golf bag into the next lake or wood chipper.

I took my own son with us on our latest outing so it was a three-generation golf outing and we did have a great time. My son was driving the golf cart around until we were caught by one of the rangers. He was polite about the whole thing, but informed us that he was not old enough to actually operate the cart so he had to stop…which meant I lost me chauffeur. He was bummed about it but at least he was able to play flag-tender and club-getter when we were too lazy to do it ourselves.

All went well and par for the course was far from met but it was good bonding time for us and since the one uncle only comes around about every ten years or so, it was really good to get out and spend some time with him as well. Now, I just need to setup an eBay account and decide on how much I want to sell these damn clubs for…
